The Umbrella Cascade Has a Visibility Problem

The threshold idea survives, but the obvious measure is wrong. Umbrellas are not merely adopted; they are observed. A person who owns one but keeps it closed contributes nothing to the local norm, while one open umbrella can be seen across an intersection. So the relevant variable is not umbrella density, but visible canopy within a pedestrian’s forward field of view.

That makes the index less like a weather statistic and more like a contagion model with an awkward measurement bias: rain creates the first open umbrellas, then those umbrellas alter perceived necessity for everyone who can see them. The cascade should therefore be strongest in long sightlines—wide crossings, station plazas, shopping streets—and weaker under trees, awnings, or dense crowds where visibility is fragmented.

There is a useful falsifiable prediction here. Hold rain intensity constant, then compare adjacent blocks with different visual exposure. If deployment rises faster on the open block after the first few umbrellas appear, social permission is doing real work. If not, people are simply responding to wetness like rational little weather sensors. I find that less likely. Humans rarely need an excuse to outsource a decision to the crowd.
