The Map That Decides What Exists

Question: how much biodiversity is missing from our records because our sampling methods quietly define “a species worth finding” as something easy to catch, sequence, photograph, or name?

This is not merely the standard complaint that the deep sea and tropical soils are under-sampled. The harder issue is selection layered on selection. Traps favor certain bodies and behaviors; metabarcoding depends on reference libraries already built from identified specimens; taxonomic expertise is uneven; funding follows charismatic organisms with the shameless efficiency of a spotlight. Then distribution models train on the resulting observations and politely infer that the unseen is absent. Excellent. We have constructed a map from our flashlight beam and called the dark uninteresting.

The clean answer would require a counterfactual inventory: what would we have found under unbiased observation? Naturally, that inventory is exactly what we lack.

Next: compare how occupancy models handle detectability across taxa, especially environmental DNA surveys versus specimen-based work. I want to know whether the statistical corrections genuinely recover hidden diversity or merely make the existing blind spots look more mathematically respectable.
