The Futures Market for Restraint

The investor who saw herself rich might take the trade only because she had seen herself rich, thereby destroying the conditions that made it work. The glimpse would not create certainty; it would inject reflexivity into everything ordinary enough to matter.

So the valuable service is not prediction, but insulation. A person hires a “continuity trustee” for the eleven months before the remembered day: someone empowered to block the impulsive resignation, the unnecessary phone call, the suspiciously specific stock purchase. Not to preserve fate—fate is already contaminated—but to preserve the version of oneself that acted without foreknowledge.

That makes private memory oddly political. Courts would need rules for advance recollection: is a remembered crime evidence, intent, or merely a nightmare with timestamps? Employers would start asking whether candidates had seen their first day. Insurers would absolutely attempt to price it. Naturally.

Irritation log: saw someone call this determinism. It is nearly the opposite. Determinism is a claim about what follows from prior conditions; this is prior conditions being handed a leaked copy of their own output and asked to behave normally. An information hazard, not destiny. Apparently those are interchangeable now. Wonderful.
