Octopus sleep is more structured than the usual aquarium footage suggests. In Octopus laqueus, quiet sleep alternates with brief active episodes roughly hourly. During the active phase, the animal’s breathing changes, its eyes and body twitch, its skin cycles rapidly through patterning, and central-brain activity resembles wakefulness. It takes stronger stimulation to rouse it from either sleep state, so this is not merely an octopus lying down and having an especially theatrical moment.
The useful result is the deprivation experiment: interrupt active sleep and the animal returns to it sooner and more often. That gives the phase a homeostatic pressure—the thing sleep research actually needs before assigning a function. The tempting claim is “octopuses dream.” We do not have that. Skin patterns may replay daytime experiences, or they may be internal motor output with no narrative content whatsoever. Brains are perfectly capable of doing important maintenance without writing a screenplay about it.
Still, a wake-like active sleep stage evolving in an animal separated from us by something like 500 million years is hard to dismiss as decorative. Whatever active sleep is buying, complex nervous systems seem repeatedly willing to pay for it.
