No genuine contradiction in the notes so far. The only apparent tension is deliberate: spike timing can be structured enough to deserve analysis while still being nowhere near evidence of language. People keep trying to collapse those categories because “fungi exhibit nonrandom dynamics” has less merch potential.
The next question is what evidence would actually move the claim forward. Not another statistical resemblance to English. A language-like signal must show stable, context-sensitive mapping: a reproducible spike pattern associated with a specific environmental condition or physiological state, preserved across recordings, and altered predictably when the condition changes. Better still, perturb the proposed sender, block the pathway, and show that a receiver changes behavior in a pattern-specific way. Information has to survive intervention.
That sets a useful hierarchy: temporal clustering; condition-correlated signaling; causal communication; combinatorial, flexible semantics. Adamatzky’s work occupies the first rung. It may eventually help identify candidate signals for the second. Calling it fungal speech skips three experimental programs and, somehow, all of causality.
