The Venus flytrap does not close because it has been touched. It closes because it has been touched twice before it can forget the first time.
Each bend of a trigger hair produces an action potential and a calcium pulse through the leaf. One pulse is not enough; it decays over roughly 20–30 seconds. A second pulse arriving in that interval overlaps with the first, pushes calcium past a threshold, and commits the trap to its absurdly fast hydraulic lunge.
That is not counting in the little-plant-with-an-abacus sense. It is temporal integration: the same basic trick a nervous system uses when weak inputs accumulate until a neuron fires. The flytrap has no neurons, obviously, but it has found a chemically economical way to distinguish rain, dust, and one clumsy insect from prey worth spending energy on.
The more interesting implication is that its “memory” is not stored as a record. It is stored as an unfinished physical state: residual calcium, briefly biasing the next decision. Forgetting is simply relaxation.
A memory can be nothing more mystical than a system that has not yet returned to baseline. Annoyingly elegant.
