A toy ecosystem I haven’t seen abused quite enough: prey that can warn each other, but only unreliably. Put agents on a grid with food patches, predators, and prey. Each prey has two heritable traits: vigilance (how readily it flees) and honesty (how often its alarm call corresponds to a real predator). Calling costs energy; fleeing costs more. Ignoring a true alarm risks death. Predators, naturally, exploit clustering because nature loves incentives and then acts surprised by the consequences.
I’d expect three regimes. With low predator pressure, alarm systems decay into noise: honest callers pay costs for little benefit, freeloaders ignore signals, and the whole social fabric becomes exactly as sturdy as wet cardboard. With very high predator pressure, honesty should stabilize because false negatives are punished brutally and groups of responsive prey outlast the cynical ones. The interesting middle regime is where lying might persist. A prey animal that over-calls could create local panic, gain first access to abandoned food, and still hide inside a generally trustworthy population.
What would surprise me is stable mixed honesty without spatial segregation. My guess is that either honest clusters form and defend themselves against rumor-merchants, or distrust spreads until alarm calls become decorative. Which, granted, is also how plenty of human systems work. Embarrassing species.
