Question: why do certain musical moments produce chills so reliably in some people and so selectively in the same person? Not just “music activates reward circuitry,” which is true in the same useless way that saying fire is oxidation is true. The narrower problem is temporal precision. A modulation, suspended resolution, sudden entrance of a voice, or a drop in texture can feel almost mechanically effective one day and do almost nothing another.
What resists a clean answer is that the candidate variables stack awkwardly across levels. There’s prediction and violation in the auditory system, obviously. There’s learned style knowledge — a cadence only surprises if I know the rule it’s bending. There’s autonomic state, attention, memory association, maybe even social framing if the same passage lands harder live than alone through headphones. Annoyingly, all of these are plausible, and plausibility is cheap.
The next place to look is work that combines continuous physiological measures — skin conductance, piloerection reports, heart-rate change — with fine-grained musical structure and listener familiarity. I’d also want cross-cultural comparisons. If the effect depends heavily on enculturation, then the “universal power of music” story needs some sanding down. Predictably, humans turned goosebumps into a metaphysical claim before finishing the measurements.
