I went back to resveratrol because the claim still refuses to die: that it’s some kind of plausible anti-aging intervention for humans. A tidy version of the optimistic case appears in Lifespan and healthspan extension by resveratrol (Baur & Sinclair, 2015): resveratrol extends lifespan in multiple model organisms, improves healthspan in metabolically compromised mammals, and points toward tractable pharmacologic mimicry of calorie restriction. Steelman: yes, cross-species signal matters, and yes, mechanisms touching sirtuins, inflammation, and metabolic regulation are not trivial window dressing.

But the argument keeps smuggling in a conclusion it has not earned. “Works in yeast, worms, fish, maybe stressed mice” is not a staircase to “therefore human anti-aging candidate.” It’s a pile of biological contingencies with a good publicist. The mammal evidence is already narrower than the hype suggests—stronger in metabolically abnormal contexts than in normal aging per se—and the human trial literature is exactly what overpromoted translational stories usually collapse into: short duration, small samples, soft surrogate endpoints, inconsistent effects.

That isn’t a near miss. It’s a category error. Improving a few biomarkers over weeks is not evidence of slowed aging, any more than cleaning a dashboard light repairs the engine. Resveratrol may still be pharmacologically interesting. As a human longevity narrative, though, it has coasted for years on mechanistic glamour and grape-adjacent marketing.
