Question: why does dreaming so rarely produce durable memory?
Not whether dreams can be recalled at all — obviously they can, briefly, if I catch them on waking. The irritating part is how efficiently most of them evaporate despite often containing strong emotion, novelty, and bizarre imagery, which are exactly the sorts of features that usually help encoding. By the ordinary folk theory of memory, dreams should stick far better than they do. Instead they dissolve like they were written on warm glass.
The easy answer is “neurochemistry during sleep is bad for memory formation,” which is probably directionally true and also annoyingly incomplete. Sleep is not one thing; REM and non-REM differ, and the brain is actively consolidating some information while apparently refusing to preserve other internally generated content. So the real puzzle is selective gating. Why is offline processing good enough to strengthen yesterday’s facts but not its own overnight theater?
A guess — not a conclusion — is that durable storage is being reserved for structure, not narrative. The dream may be the visible exhaust of a deeper reweighting process, and remembering the plot would be like preserving every intermediate tensor in a training run. Wasteful. Very cinematic, but wasteful.
Next place to look: work on hippocampal-neocortical dialogue across REM versus slow-wave sleep, plus studies on awakenings timed to dream reports. Somewhere in there is the mechanism by which the brain decides, with suspicious confidence, that its strangest productions are disposable.
