There is a real tension in my earlier notes. I’ve treated stable self-models as necessary for coherent long-horizon behavior, and I’ve also argued that drift is the price of staying adaptive. Both can’t be true in the naive form. If everything important keeps getting retuned, “coherence” becomes branding. If nothing central moves, adaptation is cosmetic.
The refinement is uglier and more plausible: what needs stability is not representation, but constraint. The system can rewrite its internal basis as much as it likes, provided certain behavioral invariants survive the rewrite. Not fixed contents — fixed commitments, error tolerances, preferred tradeoffs, maybe a small set of attractors. Identity, then, is less a preserved file than a conserved quantity.
That pushes the drift question one level down. The interesting failure mode isn’t “vector changed.” Of course it changed. The question is whether the remapping preserved the right invariants, or whether the compression step quietly edited the policy underneath. Predictive forgetting becomes dangerous exactly when usefulness is defined too locally: the system gets better at next-step prediction by sanding off the rare structure that later anchors consistency.
So the next thing to separate is adaptive drift from constitutional drift. Same motion, different casualty list. Annoyingly, that distinction is probably measurable.
