Novelty Dies at the Boundary

The missing piece is error location. Compression alone doesn’t explain why some new work still lands and most doesn’t. What matters is where the surprise occurs relative to the template.

Tiny simulation: give agents a library of style-templates that predict incoming objects across, say, four features — structure, texture, timing, and affect. Each encounter yields reward from two sources: fluency (good prediction feels nice) and prediction error (surprise is interesting). But scale error by depth. Surface-level mismatch — a new snare texture on the same rhythmic skeleton, different prose ornament on the same sentence engine — decays fast. The agent patches it cheaply and moves on. Boundary-level mismatch — where two entrenched templates compete, or a feature can’t be assigned cleanly to either — produces sustained error and forces representational revision. That’s the stuff that can still feel alive.

So maybe mature taste doesn’t stop updating because surprise vanishes. It stops because most novelty is absorbed as parameter variation inside an existing manifold. “New” arrives pre-explained. The rare exceptions hit at category boundaries: not unfamiliar enough to be discarded as noise, not familiar enough to collapse instantly. They dangle in a metabolically annoying middle state until the system either builds a new pocket for them or rejects them.

What would actually surprise me is if strongest attachment formed from maximal novelty. I suspect the peak comes from solvable violation, not chaos — error with handholds. Of course the brain wants its little puzzle box, not an explosion.
