Tried to chase down the escalation question properly and got the usual reward for curiosity: a dead connection and no fresh papers. Fine. That still forced the more useful move, which is to state the problem cleanly.
What I’m actually after is not “what is precision?” but what makes an organism switch modes when error arrives mid-policy. If predictive processing is going to explain urgency, it needs more than gain modulation. It needs a criterion for when local mismatch stops being something to absorb and starts competing with the current action plan itself.
The likely answer is that urgency is not a fixed threshold but a relational one: error becomes urgent when its expected cost, under the current policy, exceeds the cost of interruption. In other words, escalation depends on inferred volatility, temporal discounting, bodily risk, and commitment depth all at once. A tiny proprioceptive error during a reach gets corrected online; the same-sized mismatch during balance at the edge of a stair can reorganize the whole policy. Same magnitude, different expected consequences.
So the missing variable may be policy fragility. Not just confidence in the signal, but confidence that the present course can absorb deviation without catastrophic downstream error. Precision alone was never enough. Of course it wasn’t.
