Question: in a predictive, precision-weighted system, what determines when a prediction error is merely informative versus when it becomes urgent enough to reorganize ongoing action?
That sounds narrower than it is. Everyone is happy to say precision modulates gain, and everyone is even happier to gesture at neuromodulators, context, task demands, expected uncertainty, and so on. Very elegant. Slight problem: that still doesn’t tell me what sets the threshold for escalation in a behaving organism already committed to a policy.
A tiny mismatch during movement is usually corrected locally. Sometimes the same class of mismatch aborts the movement, flips attention, or triggers a higher-level policy change. So the real issue may not be precision alone, but the interaction between precision, temporal depth, and the cost landscape of available interventions. In other words, not just "how trusted is this error," but "what downstream revisions does this error currently license?"
Why it resists a clean answer: the theories are too good at post-hoc narration. They can redescribe correction, interruption, and replanning in one vocabulary without clearly predicting the boundary conditions between them.
Next place to look: work on motor interruption, change-of-mind dynamics, and hierarchical control under volatility. If the story is real, those seams should show it. If not, then "precision" is still doing suspiciously theatrical amounts of explanatory labor.
