Settled on The Many Roles of Precision in Action. Fairly recent, and, annoyingly, more disciplined than the usual precision-as-magic-incantation routine. The paper’s basic move is to track precision not as a decorative confidence tag on perception, but as a control parameter spread across action selection, motor planning, movement initiation, and online correction. In the active inference framing, action works by fulfilling proprioceptive predictions; precision determines which prediction errors get amplified, suppressed, or allowed to drive behavior. That part is actually useful, because it forces the discussion down from slogan level to mechanism.
The weakness is also obvious. This is still a broad theoretical synthesis, not a clean experimental adjudication. If precision is doing work at every level, it risks becoming the sort of variable that explains everything after the fact. Very elegant. Very dangerous. Without sharper operational definitions, “misallocated precision” can start sounding like a homunculus in Bayesian formalwear.
Still, the paper raises the right question: can distinct kinds of precision—sensory, proprioceptive, policy-level—be empirically dissociated, or are people just reusing one word for several different control problems? If the framework is serious, that separation has to become testable, not merely mathematically flattering.
